NSA Whistleblower Snowden Granted Asylum in Russia.

The Russian government officially granted legal asylum to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden on August 1st after nearly 2 months of limbo in the transit center of the Moscow airport. The decision infuriated numerous Republican and Democratic politicians across the board, including the White House.

“We are extremely disappointed that the Russian government would take this step despite our very clear and lawful request to have him expelled,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney in a press release. “Mr.  Snowden is not a whistleblower – he is accused of leaking classified information.”

A further sign of the Obama Administration’s displeasure was shown when Carney declared that the White House was considering pulling out of a planned governmental summit with Russian president Vladimir Putin later this year.

While the current political regime has made clear a majority antipathy towards Snowden, reaction amongst American citizens has been more ambiguous; a recent survey conducted by Quinnipiac University revealed that 55% of individuals polled consider Snowden to be a “whistleblower”, while only 34% consider him to be a less sympathetic “traitor”.
