Riots Rock Swedish Suburbs, Over 100 Cars Set On Fire.

Riots have rocked the Swedish city of Stockholm for the past four days, creating scenes of chaos in a country often viewed as idyllic and tranquil by the outside world. As the BBC News reports:

“Rioters have lit fires and stoned emergency services in the suburbs of Stockholm for the third night in a row after a man was shot dead by police. Incidents were reported in at least nine suburbs of the Swedish capital and police made eight arrests. On Sunday night, more than 100 cars were set alight, Swedish media report. “

Sweden is frequently lauded alongside Norway, Denmark and Finland by the general Left as an example of a successful welfare state and benevolent “big” government, for its economic system known loosely as the “Nordic Model”. A wide array of welfare programs has also made Sweden an extremely popular destination for immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers from throughout Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, with the number of immigrants in recent years numbering over 15% of the total population of Sweden. However, the immigrant populations have struggled to find substantial employment (or even any employment at all) in a nation renowned for strict labor regulations mandating generous compensation and vacation time benefits. As Nikolas Pollard of Yahoo News reports:

“Metros and trains out of Stockholm center late at night are full of exhausted-looking Arabic or Spanish speaking immigrants returning home from menial jobs. Even second generation immigrants struggle to find white collar employment. One Asian diplomat puts it: “On the one hand Sweden has all these immigrants. On the other hand, where are they? It sometimes seems they are mostly selling hotdogs.” “
